Paralysis

What is Paralysis?

When people have paralysis, they will experience complete loss of muscle function in one or more muscle groups within their bodies.  People usually know that they have paralysis when they cannot feel affected areas or cannot move affected areas.  The leading cause of paralysis is damage to the nervous system, which runs along people's spinal cords.  Due to the fact that people's spinal cords are connected to their brain stems, anytime people sustain brain stem injuries, brain damage or traumatic brain injuries, they may develop paralysis as a side effect.

Once people are paralyzed, they will need ongoing assistance from caregivers and family members.  Paralysis often affects people's limbs and extremities, which means they may not be able to do things like walk, change their clothes or even feed themselves.  Paralyzed individuals will have limited mobility and may also find that speaking, breathing or moving is very difficult.  Due to the fact that paralysis can limit individuals in many ways, individuals suffering from this medical condition may be very dependant in their day-to-day lives.

Causes of Paralysis

Paralysis can be caused by a great number of things.  However, people commonly develop paralysis after sustaining spinal cord injuries and brain injuries.  Additionally, paralysis can occur when people have suffered strokes, birth injuries or blunt force trauma.  In the latter example, people may experience blunt force trauma that leads to paralysis if they are involved in motor vehicle accidents, workplace accidents or even sports accidents.

After people have developed paralysis as a result of third party negligence in the Bay area, they may wish to discuss their cases with experienced San Francisco paralysis lawyers that have handled prior catastrophic injury cases and who are trained in personal injury law.
