Paraplegia

What is Paraplegia?

Paraplegia is a medical condition that occurs when there is impairment of people's motor and/or sensory functions in their lower bodies.  The areas that are most commonly affected by paraplegia are the thoracic, lumbar and sacral regions of people's bodies.  If people's upper bodies are affected, it is called quadriplegia because all four limbs are paralyzed and immobile.

There are numerous things than can cause paraplegia in individuals.  However, the leading causes are serious spinal cord injuries, spina bifida (a congenital condition), brain injuries and damage to the nervous system, which is connected to both the spinal cord and the brain stem.  When people suffer from paraplegia, they will be immobile in their lower extremities.  Therefore, doing day-to-day things, such as walking, will not be an option for people with paraplegia.  Due to the fact that people with paraplegia cannot move from the waist down, they may need assistance from medical devices like wheelchairs as well as help from caregivers and close family members.

Paraplegia & Lawsuits

Sometimes, people are born paraplegic and the medical condition is genetic.  Other times, paraplegia results from people being involved in car accidents or sustaining injuries during their births.  Regardless of the cause, anytime it is believed that negligence played a role in people developing paraplegia in North California, people may wish to discuss their situations with skilled San Francisco paraplegia lawyers. In some cases, people who have paraplegia may discover that they are entitled to compensation from negligent parties.  However, in order to obtain compensation, people will need help from experienced San Francisco catastrophic injury attorneys who can protect their rights, review their medical records and ultimately construct strong cases on their behalf.
