Quadriplegia
What is Quadriplegia?
Quadriplegia is a medical condition that occurs when a person has paralysis in all four limbs. If a person only has paralysis in his or her lower limbs, it is called paraplegia. When people have quadriplegia, they will not be able to move their limbs or may just have partial control of their limbs and torso. People with quadriplegia have impaired motor and sensory functions, which means that sensory and control may be lost.
People who have the medical condition, quadriplegia, will often need assistance from close family members and caregivers because they are immobile and unable to perform the day-to-day tasks that many of us take for granted. Additionally, people with quadriplegia may be confined to wheelchairs and may need to rely upon the daily use of other medical devices.
Causes of Quadriplegia
Often times, people become quadriplegic after sustaining severe brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, particularly to the C1 - C8 sections of their spines. People may also develop quadriplegia after being involved in accidents, like motor vehicle accidents and slip and fall accidents. There are also cases where people develop quadriplegia after incurring illnesses like polio or transverse myelitis. As you can see, quadriplegia may be unavoidable. However, in cases where people are involved in accidents that led to them becoming quadriplegic, quadriplegia may have been prevented if the accidents were caused by third party negligence.
Therefore, if people were involved in accidents that were caused by negligent individuals in the Bay area, they should meet with qualified San Francisco injury lawyers. In some cases, quadriplegia sufferers may be allowed to file personal injury claims to collect compensation for their medical condition.
